Steve started Western Rivers Flyfisher in 1986. When he did one of the fly rod companies he felt was critical to the success of his shop was RL Winston. His first premium fly rod and still one of his most prized possessions is a Winston, yet Winston back then wasn't an easy rod line to acquire. Five years after he opened the doors and after acquiring Sage and Scott, Tom Morgan finally agreed to open Western Rivers as a dealer. That acquisition bookended his trio of rod brands that he felt were critical to Western Rivers foundation and success. Almost 30 years later that hasn't changed. Founded in 1929, RL Winston's name was derived from it's founders, Lew Stoner, Robert Winther, and Red Loskot's. Winston rod company moved from San Francisco to Twin Bridges, Montana decades later where it hand crafts its beautiful rods in the heart of trout country. Of the fly rod companies that we support at Western Rivers, only Winston has been around long enough to have started with cane, then glass, all long before carbon fiber became the rage. When they introduced boron into their rods and launched the Biix line of fly rods they introduced a rod design that has become their signature over the past decade. Their rods have always had a reputation for being light and incredibly smooth casting and in todays rush to build faster and lighter rods, they've maintained that tradition over the years, especially in their latest boron/carbon fiber composite rod line, the LS. Without a doubt Winston builds one of the most beautiful fly rods one could own. They are also some of the smoothest fly rods you'll ever cast.
